I am a lifelong competitive swimmer who has dabbled in olympic distance/xterra triathlon, mountain bike stage racing and long distance cross-country skiing events. However, the technical aspect of swimming is what keeps me coming back to the sport; even after 30+ years in the water it feels like the opportunity to improve is endless. Two years ago, I joined a Master's club (Hyack Coquitlam) and started competing in meets again. Hearing "take your marks!" is music to my swimmers' ears.
I have spent more time in the open water this year due to pandemic-related pool restrictions. Fortunately, I live in an area that has plenty of options for swimming. Between our beautiful local lakes and the Pacific Ocean, I have put in more mileage (and had more interesting sea life encounters!) than I ever would have in the pool. Swimming outdoors also provides the perfect stress relief from my job as an Emergency RN on the front lines of Covid-19.
