I have been a single mother since I was 22 years old (for my son’s entire life). He just turned 16. He was diagnosed with Asperger’s when he was in fourth grade and now is just labeled as “Autism Spectrum Disorder.” I started swimming again the summer he turned 13. He needed an out from video games and I had my first summer off since I started working as an educator for the local school district. I hadn’t swam since I was pregnant with him. I quickly got the long distance swimming bug, and things took off from there. I want him to see how important it is not to give up, and if you work hard and persist, you can achieve great things and feel good in the process.
