I got into triathlon after road cycling for several years and doing the bike leg in a relay. I was in awe of the other athletes and admired their toughness. I saw people of all backgrounds, shapes, and sizes, and they were all happy enough to be there to compete. I am an extremely competitive person and I was immediately drawn into this world.
I love the structure and the lessons in discipline and time management. I enjoy the calm I feel after a good swim or the freedom I feel on the open road on my bike. I enjoy the anxious energy before a race and the rush you get when you finally cross the starting mat and dive into the water. I love the community and the energy they give you on the course when you’re at dark places and the feeling of accomplishment when you finally cross the line. Most of all, I love that I’m completely accountable for my success. This isn’t something I could do alone and I’m grateful for all of my friends and family who support me and the teammates that I train with, but at the end of the day I dictate how prepared I am when I toe the line.
